Onion Bucket

Being a mostly self-taught artist has meant not just exploration and discovery for me, but also study of and learning from other artists' techniques. This 22 1/2" x 15" watercolor is probably my favorite of all my watercolor work to date. It was inspired by the work of Ray Hendershot from his book, Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors. I have done other watercolors of buckets since painting this one a number of years ago, but the pleasure this painting brings me each time I view it pushes me forward to learn and grow more as an artist.

This painting is not for sale.

What a great choice of subject Joanne. The colors of the two onions and the bucket are so alike. The peeling paint on the bucket and the way an onion peels apart seems to go hand in hand for me.
Well done.

I, as well, am pretty much self taught with a lot exploration. So, I so totally understand about trial an error with style and medium. This is wonderful piece! I praise you with going with watercolor. That's a tough medium. I look forward to seeing the next one.

Thanks for your insightful comments, Frank. For me, when meaning and painting connect in the way you mention, it becomes a powerful dynamic. I appreciate your encouragement.

Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for stopping by my blog...and for your comments. I agree that watercolor is tough - it is quite challenging, but when it turns out, there is no feeling like it! I'll be visiting your blog again soon. I look forward to your work in 2008!

Beautiful composition and nice attention to details. Love the fact the you have kept a balancing act with the colors of the bucket to reflect those of the onions.
