Progression of Sunrise, October 17th, 2008

I hope your monitor shows how glorious the  colors of today's sunrise was. (I was very disappointed to view Mexican Lemons on my work computer - the lemons actually looked orangey, and believe me, they are a very vibrant yellow!)

I usually am up, coffee in hand, walking into the studio around 6:00 a.m. As I walk past the kitchen window, I have this view of the sky, and of each day's sunrise. Today was one of those special moments when all the colors of the palette seemed to spill out of the heavens onto the clouds! I grabbed my camera, (having put down my coffee), and ran out onto our deck in bathrobe and slippers, and just snapped pictures as the sky slowly changed over the course of maybe 8 minutes.  If you image the first 2 pictures together, it will give you an idea of the panoramic view that I have from my deck just off my kitchen.

Fortunately, the air was warmer than the last few days - a balmy 10 degrees at this time of the morning... but no wind. Just the soft mooing of cows in the distance, a couple of coyote yelps, and glorious color bouncing around the vastness of our big Alberta skies. I love this time of year when these kind of sunrises happen. There are times when it truly looks like the sky is bleeding, it is so red. I think I must try to represent one of these pictures in a painting... I know a painting cannot come close to showing the beauty of this morning, but maybe I can capture enough of it to take someone's breath away, just as mine was in being a witness to the grandeur of the beginning of this day.

Beautiful shots! Of course, knowing what the reality might have looked like, I say there was probalby some limitations to them from my monitor. (your lemons are nice and yellow on my screen though so not as bad as your work computer!)

I'm assuming that your shots are panning right to left? I looked at the sky's brightness and the silhouette of the foilage and it seems to me that is what your series is.

What a beautiful greeting you have every morning! :)

Beautiful. Reminds me of sunrises in Mexico City where we had about 4 meters of window facing east. I never got tired of the view.

Joanne,
I can't believe you painted with oils. You did such a nice job. I'm sorry I missed it when you originally posted it. I'm taking a class right now and have been so caught up with school work. The photos are beautiful by the way...I don't know how you do it. Take care of yourself.

Thanks, Kim! You know these skies and how fabulous the colors can be!

Hi Michelle,

yes, the first two pictures are more or less a panoramic view of the trees n back of our house, the houses across the valley, and the eastern skies where the sun rises in late fall and winter. The rest of the photos are shots from the deck of the sky as it was changing. I am very happy and blessed to live here!

Hi Dave,
Do you miss that view from your windows in Mexico? I know I would miss this big sky if we left here - but there are many beautiful places in the world to live... Glad you are back home...

Hi Jean!

What kind of a class are you taking? It sounds like your life is really full right now! Don't overdo - remember, winter and cold are on their way, and we want you healthy throughout this winter season! :-)

Thanks for the comment about the oils - I as surprised at the difference in technique that is needed from acrylics - at least I thought it was different. For others, it might be easy!

I will keep playing with oils in between my other paintings - I want to eventually be able to really get good with them. (Like you!) ttyl
