Pink Ladies All in a Row

Pink Ladies All in a Row
                    11.5" x 15"
original watercolor on 300 lb. Arches paper

I really like eating apples - and the fact that we can get so many different varieties throughout the year is wonderful! I know my daughter, who lives in Mexico, used to crave apples when she first moved there as apples were either not available or too expensive to buy. We are so blessed with all the fruit and vegetables we can purchase year round if we choose to.

These are Pink Ladies. A couple of years ago I bought some of these yummy apples and set up a still life which I took many photos of. I then painted a small version of this painting (slightly different composition and much smaller painting) which sold at one of the shows I was in that year. I am again preparing for a juried show which is in October, and this will be one of the paintings I submit for acceptance into the show. Hopefully the judges like apples too. :-)

Of course, I am always happy to paint your favorite fruit for you as well! If you are interested in commissioning a painting, please contact me: jogiesbrecht@gmail.com

Can almost see the wax on these gals! Great texture in the skins.

Thanks, Kim. I used a spatter technique for the skin texture, but it was fairly subtle. Thanks for noticing it! :-)

Super vibrant colors! I have been told and shown by an artist friend of mine that Aquaboard holds bright colors better that traditional watercolor paper. I don't know if you have ever painted on it.

Beautiful expression of how these apples show their blush of color from the skin through to the pinkish glow of the flesh.

I miss apple varieties like these but seeing your painting reminds me of how lovely this variety works as applesauce.

Hi David,
Thanks for the tip on Aquaboard! I have never tried it, but now that I know about it, I will pick some up and give it a go. I appreciate finding out about new things. :-)

Hi Bonnie,

I have not tried Pink Ladies as applesauce... next time I get some, they are going to be mushed! Thanks for the visit.

Thanks for your visit, Emm. I am honored! I am actually experimenting with different things to see if I can settle on what is my style in painting, regardless of the medium. This one was fun to do.

Hi Paz,
I had never heard of Pink Ladies until one of my sisters-in-law declared that they are her favorites. After trying one, I understood her love of their taste! Thanks for the encouragement, friend.

I had given up on apples until about 5 yrs ago when I had my first Pink Lady.....there isn't another apple that comes close. Your painting does, it's great !

Hi Nick!
Thanks for visiting me... I am truly honored. I have long wished that I could take one of your workshops, and now that you have a dvd (is it already out, or is it coming out soon?), I am thinking I will order it as a second-best to seeing you paint in person. Hope you like your new Mac as much as I do mine!
