| Siberian Tiger Sketch - not complete |
Things around this house are pretty busy with 3 small children, 7 people in total to cook and clean for (groceries have to be bought every week now!), teaching art classes 2 1/2 days a week, preparing for 2 art shows, blogging and so on...
Even though my life is full, it seems that I can still waste time. So I am trying to be more aware of how I do waste time, and redeem those moments for something more valuable. Often in the evening, we will gather as the adults in this family and watch a hockey game, a dvd, or some tv show. It is a time to unwind, talk, and just enjoy the quiet at the end of a busy day. I have decided that I should be doing more with that time than just sitting there - especially if everyone is fairly engaged in watching the screen, so I have picked up my sketch book again, and am doing some sketching.
A few months ago, we went to the zoo, and I got a couple of nice shots of the Siberian tigers. They are such regal cats... so incredibly beautiful! This unfinished sketch is of the female who turned and looked right at me as I took the picture of her. This sketch is done with charcoal and a blending stump. I now remember why I hadn't used this medium in the last few years... I am so covered with charcoal at the end of a sketch that it is rather embarrassing! Oh well - I do have fun! And it is furthering my drawing skills rather than "wasting" my time. :-)

I painted one of the Calgary zoo tigers years ago as well as the owls. My daughter and I used to go there quite often.

How did your paintings turn out? I'd love to see them! The Calgary Zoo is such a beautiful place with all the innovative changes they have made - it's a great place to spend a day, whether you have kids or not. I might try to go there in the winter and get some snow shots of the Siberian Tigers then.
