TEACHING CHILDREN TO APPRECIATE ART, PART 2

One of my favorite artists to teach about was Ted Harrison. (Ted was also my father's name!) Ted Harrison, who was born in England,  lived in the Yukon for many years, and you can see this province's influence in his famous works. He moved to Victoria, British Columbia later in his artistic life. I was so sorry to hear of his passing earlier this year. :-(

For children, Mr. Harrison's works of art were a wonderful teaching tool. I LOVE his use of vibrant color!!!  Here is one of his pieces, and the second set of questions to use with children in building their appreciation of art:

What is the first thing that catches your eye?

Is anything repeated? 

How are things connected?

What is the most important color, shape, or object?

Do some shapes appear to be closer or far away?

ART MAKES A DIFFERENCE TO EVERY CHILD

I find it so exciting to see examples of how art can make a difference in the lives of children - all children. I am inspired to think of how simple materials and a supportive, believing environment can change the course of a child's life...how his or her future can be drastically altered for the better through such a simple medium, such a simple process. It doesn't matter the age of the child, the background, the neighbourhood, the experiences...art can change a child's future. I love this:
