With this painting I have begun a series of smaller paintings depicting many of the photos I have taken of sunrises, sunsets, and Chinook skies. The most spectacular skies are in the spring and fall, when the sky is dark as the sun comes up or goes down. In summer, the sun comes up way too early (the birds start singing outside my bedroom by 3:30 a.m.). It also sets very late - the sky is still light enough to be outside at 10:00 p.m.

As with Alberta Blue, this is the sky and tree silhouette I see from my back deck, just outside my kitchen window. How blessed I am to enjoy this fantastic view!

This one is done. I really like the juxtaposition of the mowed grass on the one side of the fence and the long grass on the other side. As well, there is a lot of texture in the trees, but the fence is relatively smooth. All in all, I like this painting, and think I learned a lot about painting in oils by persevering through to completion.

Well, here it is, finished at last! I absolutely LOVE how the water turned out in this painting! I feel like I am right there, seeing the shifting greens and blues of one of the rivers which run through the mountains. That is definitely one of the many things I loved about camping in the Rockies... the color of the water. (But, believe me, it is icy cold water, even in summer!)

Oil Painting Stage 4

I have to find out from my friend who gave me his photo to paint where exactly this spot is. It is either in British Columbia or Alberta - but not sure which.

Now you can see where the painting is heading. I am loving how the river is looking, and the brights of the deciduous trees in fall.

Next posting should be fairly close to being finished... or maybe even done!
