A Great Read

Last year I read The Kite Runner and loved the book (I never did see the movie, but heard it was also very good). It was well written, and very poignant. I have just finished a second book by the same author, Khaled Hosseini, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and have enjoyed it even more than The Kite Runner. It has given me a whole new perspective on Afghanistan and the suffering of the people there - the devastation that war brings on all who experience it first hand. This book is set in modern times, beginning in the 1970's and ending in the year 2003.

I highly recommend this book as one which you will find hard to put down once you begin reading - it definitely is worth reading just to gain a new perspective on the lives of others in different parts of the world.

Thanks for the recommendation. I heard this is a really good book. The other day I was on the bus (very crowded) As I squeezed inside, I saw a young girl, a teenager about 16 years old, with the book in her lap. She was looking really serious and then I asked her if the book was any good. Her whole face and body language changed to that of happiness. She smiled and told me, "Yes! Really good." I could see how much she enjoyed her book.

Hi TipArt,
I am sure you will find the book to be one that you will not soon forget. :-)

Hi Jean,
Yes - it was a good read, but also disturbing in that you KNOW these things actually take place, yet you wish they didn't. How are you doing? Are you taking more courses this term?

Hi Paz,
I am sure that this book would have had quite an impact on one so young... when she compares her life to the life of the one girl in the book who is 15, she could not help but see huge differences.
How are you doing these days? Are you fully recovered from your surgery and feeling good? Talk to you again soon. :-)

Hi Joanne! Thanks for stopping by my site, I have been feeling totally left out from the blog world due to my technological issues, so it was like a breath of fresh air to see your comment! and I'm so glad my dear husband is allowing me to use his desktop... so I won't be totally out...

Yes, I've been working, and will post them when possible.

Thanks for the book recommendation... I love reading and I did read The Kite Runner several years ago when it first came out. Fascinating storytelling! I belonged to a book club when I read it.. we invited a lady from Afeganistan who personally knew the author, to talk to us about the book, her personal experiences and the country. Fascinating lady! I'm afraid to watch the movie because usually they are not as good as the books... maybe if I keep low expectations I might be pleasantly surprised...
Stay well, and stay intouch! Hugs! Theresa

Hi Joanne...I just finished this book on CD. I have to travel 3 hrs to atelier in Seattle every week, and so I listen to books on tape. This was a winner. I intend to read "The Kiterunner" next.

Hi Theresa,

I just saw The Kite Runner today - it was on T.V.!!! And I am happy to say it stuck to the book and was very well done. I can tell you that you don't need to be afraid to watch it - I don't think you will be disappointed at all! That is SO COOL that you got to hear from a lady from Afghanistan just how all of the events in the book affected her!
Hope your computer is repaired very soon - I miss seeing your lovely paintings. Take care and keep painting in the meantime. Hugs back atchya!

Hi Susan,
What a great way to spend time while traveling! I think you will enjoy The Kite Runner as much as this book - I certainly did. AND the movie was on T.V. today so I watched it... was VERY good! My husband told me that the boys who played the main parts in The Kite Runner had to be snuck out of the country after the movie was released as their lives were in danger from the Taliban! That tells you something, I think. Anyways, keep being patient with the drywall dust. You will soon be in that beautiful new studio. :-)
