Alberta Blue triptych

This is the first of 3 panels which will make up the Alberta Blue triptych. It is based on the view from my kitchen window of the Poplar trees in winter against that brilliant clear blue sky that distinguishes this part of Alberta from everywhere else in the world. I did a small study earlier in the year, and have that triptych up for sale at my art show. I am hoping to finish this grouping before the show, but I have a feeling it might be the night before when it is finished, if at all! 


I absolutely love the subtle yet visible shift from the intense dark of the sky at the top of the canvas to the lighter blue at the bottom. That took many coats of paint and lots of blending, which is not too easy to do here in Calgary where the air is so dry. Acrylics dry quickly to begin with, and when you add a dry environment, you can end up with ridges and lines of color in the time it takes you to paint from the top to the bottom of the canvas! So I have developed a special way that I approach the canvas and work to keep the paint well blended.
