Fly Fisherman

"Fly Fisherman"
watercolor commission

This watercolor painting is a commission for a collector's husband - his Christmas gift. He loves to fish, and fly fishing is his favorite. He has his favorite spots to go, and this one is in British Columbia, Canada. It is really cool to be able to frame this one as well as paint it, as his wife has given me one of his favorite hooks to add to the matting as it is framed. Truly a special and unique gift which I know he will enjoy for many years to come!

FLY FISHERMAN

Watercolor study for a commission

I am back to watercolors for a while. What you see on my easel is an unfinished watercolor study for a commission I am working on of a fly fisherman.

It is so great to paint in these gorgeous colors that make up the water, and to work in blooms and backruns as part of the stream's movement. I think what I will do is experiment on the study, and then move to the similar part of the commission and recreate what I liked in the study, piece by piece. That will be easier and quicker than making notes, and then trying to decipher them later!
:-) As well, I will have the paint already mixed and ready to go - so why not? We'll see if I like this method better than doing the entire study first, then the commission.

The study will be finished and available for sale in my home art show, November 13th and 14th. More details to follow.

A River Runs Through It

Today I get to meet with a collector to work out a commissioned painting she wants me to do for her. I think it is a surprise Christmas gift for her husband, who loves to fish - and in particular, to fly fish.

We are going to go through the photos she has of him fly fishing in a couple of rivers he frequents, and she will give me the details of what she has envisioned. I am then going to do a sketch for her so that I can make sure the painting is just right, then it's into the actual painting process. I think painting this commission will be a lot of fun!
