Rose

We are back from Victoria, BC. It was a great trip - smooth plane rides, fun with our family, and wonderful times walking and biking. We rented bikes one day, and did about a 45-50 km. ride, up hills and down hills, along the coast line. Another day we went bought bread, cheese, fruit and had a picnic on the seashore. We had Mead to go with the meal - purchased at a local winery. Mead is an old drink which Shakespeare wrote about in his plays, made from honey. It is a very unique drink which certainly "went with" the picnic theme.

Our hotel was within walking distance of downtown, and very close to The Empress. On the grounds of the beautiful old building, they have thousands of roses in an extensive rose garden. I have never seen so many different kinds of roses in one spot. Many of them were exquisite, but some were a disappointment when I went to smell them and they had no scent! It was an amazing garden - one which I am sure takes several full time gardeners to take care of.

This acrylic painting of a rose is 20 x 20 inches. The background roses were done with a palette knife in a regular gel, which is the background for the painting.

I'm so happy to hear you are back!

Victoria holds a special place in my heart - that is where I honeymooned. I've been to that rose garden, it really is extensive.

I've love to see a side shot or a close up of this piece so I can get a better idea of the textured parts. Its beautiful, I love the colour palette you've chosen for this. 20"x20" is a lot of painting!

Hi Michelle.

Glad to hear that you like Victoria as much as I do. It is a very beautiful place to be - and of course, next to the ocean is a favorite place for me personally.

This piece is quite lovely in person - I only wish that it would show on a monitor as it is in real life! Maybe I will have to bring it when we next get together so you can see the texture of the background roses.

I am waiting for you to post something new and exciting on your blog... :-)

Your vacation seemed wonderful. I have only been to Victoria once, some 20 years ago. It was extremely charming. When you have to take a ferry in order to get somewhere, it always gives a heighten sense of being on vacation. Striking color scheme in your composition. Happy Stampede!

Hi Alvin,

Thanks for your visit! Yes - vacation time was wonderful, but now it is back to work for me! Have you ever contemplated leaving your profession and painting full-time? With your gallery shows and commissions, it seems you could be working as many hours in painting as in the medical profession!

Happy running.
