This week, during the 20 hour challenge, I worked on Lake View as one of my projects.
For a very long time now, I have wanted to conquer painting water, but I really wanted to try it in oils. However, I have avoided oils because of the toxicity issues I kept hearing about with this medium. However, I have finally caved in, purchased the least toxic brand of oils, and begun to experiment with them.
My first oil painting I did on a 6" x 6" birch panel which was fun - but kind of felt a bit like tole painting... I am sure it was painting on wood that made it feel that way. Mexican Lemons was the result of that first attempt.
Then I did the painting of the pears which was my post for Wednesday of this week. Pears was on a 6" x 6" canvas, and I love how bright and pure the colors are with the oils.
And now, a landscape with water... this was fun, and came together surprisingly well. I am excited with my first attempt at water - at least I haven't wiped it down yet! I know that as I explore and become accustomed to the way oils behave, I will only get better, and that is what I am looking for!

Lovely. Just lovely! The reflections and the clouds are especially good. Peaceful, too.
Thanks Kim. I REALLY enjoyed painting this one... it was like I knew what I was doing and where I was going, and I actually "got there"! How is your latest painting coming along?
Okay Joanne, that's the last straw!
I told my husband time to try oils. He can blame you for my new adventure :) laughing out loud.
This painting turned out beautifully. Isn't is fun to try new mediums?
Love ya friend, Anni
Hey Anni,
You and I can be in the oily adventures together!!! I would love to have you console me as I moan about not achieving what I have in my mind, and I would encourage you and cheer you on in your masterpieces which would turn out on the 1st try every time! hehehe
Have a great weekend my friend.
Hugs!
I think the piece turned out beautifully...and congrats on the Christine Kane CD - lucky lady!
Joanne, you just keep amazing me. I loved the lemons ... but this is just incredibly beautiful and, like Kim said, peaceful. You have such a wonderful gift!
Thanks Veronica... this has been a very good week for me in many ways. I do feel really happy at winning the cd as well. :-)
Hi Janet,
You are so very kind! As you well know, I really enjoy my time spent painting... and this one was really lovely to do. Stay tuned for more attempts at oils. :-) Have a great weekend, dear friend!
Your first landscape in oils! Nice! Really, really nice. Enjoy the new medium. A very wonderful watercolorist named Adele Earnshaw was forced to switch to oils and says she will never go back.....I'm stickin' to watercolors until I get it right. =O)
Hi Connie!
I, too, am not abandoning watercolors... but I also am wanting to explore other mediums just to see if there is a pull in that direction for me. I am so familiar with watercolor that it is kind of "known", even if it is unpredictable and challenging, whereas there is a mystery about the oils... and I like adventure and mystery!!! Have a great weekend. :-)
*gasp!* stunning painting. love the reflection.
paz
Hi My Friend Paz! Thank you for the *gasp* - you made me smile really BIG! Guess what, Paz? It snowed tonight!!!! Yes - there is white on the ground and on the tree leaves! I am very very tired of snow - so I paint beautiful summer scenes which make me feel warm!!! Have a great weekend and hugs to you.
This is your first?!
You've achieved a such a believable tranquility in the water and reflection.
It's beautiful.
I'm betting you feel encouraged to take on some more landscapes.
Now all that snow on the 6th of June seems unjust.
Thank you Bonnie! I take your comments as great encouragement! And yes - I do want to try some more landscapes with oils - in the very near future!
The snow has melted except in amongst the trees, but the temperature remains cold. I have not gone down to my main garden to check on it yet... I am afraid what I will find will truly discourage me after all the work I did planting it. But perhaps more survived than I think!
Have a great week, friend!
